The Power Tab Editor is a piece of software that allows guitar players to compose music without actually being required to know how to read or write in musical notation. It uses tablature to notate music and even has a midi playback function so the music can be previewed to ensure that the timing is right. Power Tab is completely free, but it only runs on Windows operating systems.

In addition to composing music, Power Tab can be used by the student to learn how to play songs. Tablature through Power Tab is more effective than standard text-only tablature, because Power Tab notates rhythm and allows midi playback of the song.
